The surprise launch of Portal: Companion Collection following Nintendo’s Partner Showcase was a momentous occasion for the fan-favorite franchise. Portal: Companion Collection marks the first time a Valve-developed game has released on a Nintendo console. While Nintendo had previously released the Clockstone-developed Bridge Constructor: Portal spinoff, none of Valve’s in-house entries had ever come to Nintendo platforms. However, hackers have quickly noticed that Portal: Companion Collection is secretly housing Half-Life 2 files as well, tucked away within the compilation.

Twitter user OatmealDome shared the surprise discovery Tuesday following the Companion Collection’s release after diving into its files. While the user confirmed the Switch version’s similarities to the previously released port to Nvidia Shield, they also discovered a wealth of Half-Life 2 files contained within. Though they confirmed “finding Half-Life 2 files is expected,” given Portal’s use of Half-Life 2 assets, the port reportedly contains unnecessary files such as NPCs and models exclusive to Half-Life 2.
In later testing, OatmealDome was even able to use the files to mod a playable, albeit buggy, version of Half-Life 2 into the Portal compilation. Portal notably borrows several art assets from Half-Life 2 with the two franchises sharing the same universe. While many fans may be hopeful the inclusion of Half-Life files may hint at a Half-Life 2 Switch port to come, Valve has not made any statement on the possibility. The Orange Box, another previous console compilation of Valve games, also notably skipped Nintendo platforms on its release in 2007.
The discovery of Half-Life 2 files contained within Portal: Companion Collection comes as many fans wonder what’s next for the iconic franchise. Recent Valve games like Aperture Desk Job have hinted at potential Half-Life games to come. Half-Life 2 also continues to see plenty of new mods and fan projects even 18 years after its release. While Half-Life fans may not see the Half-Life 3 they had waited for, Portal: Companion Collection shows that Half-Life 2’s legacy lives on through Valve’s other franchises.
Portal: Companion Collection is available now for Nintendo Switch.
