Newtypes are able to learn, master, and demonstrate new skills instantly; they are also able to communicate on different levels telepathically and empathically; this allows their heightened levels of spatial awareness, making them incredibly precise fighters against large numbers paired with their increased reflexes, comprehension, and technical skills. A Newtype can be the tide that turns the battle around or be the destruction of an entire planet which is what makes them so dangerous. While there have not been many, here are the best Newtypes in Mobile Suit Gundam.
8 Seabook Arno
First appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam F91, Seabook Arno was a young engineer working on a space colony when it is attacked by terrorists; he and his family escape and find refuge on an Earth Forces warship. A series of events forces Arno to Pilot the prototype gundam aboard the ship and defend it from the same terrorist that attacked the colony; Arno masterfully vanquishes all enemy mobile suits and returns to the warship, and goes on to become the primary pilot of the gundam prototype.
Arno begins fighting in the war against the Crossbone Vanguard, who seek to claim the space colonies and their resources for themselves. Still, his dedication and will are constantly tested as the plot thickens. Arno would appear again in the series Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossbone, this time piloting the crossbone X-1. Arno would find himself on the opposite side, now resisting the earth forces and Jupiter empire and becoming the leader of the Crossbone Vanguard.
7 Heero Yuy
Heero Yuy serves as one of several protagonists in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, made popular in the west by the Toonami block on Cartoon Network during the 90s. Heero is a cold and calculating soldier, raised from birth to be the perfect weapon and pilot of a gundam.
Heero’s mental and physical capabilities far surpass any other, making him unstoppable on the battlefield. Heero pilots the Wing Gundam in the series and the Wing Gundam Zero in the film Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. The power in Heero’s gundam, along with his own combat prowess and Newtpye abilities, made him able to take out entire legions of enemy soldiers single-handedly. Gundam Wing has recently been remastered, which was announced among other Gundam projects to be released this year.
6 Kamille Bidan
Kamille Bidan is highly thought of as the strongest Newtype in the Gundam universal century timeline. Kamille first appeared in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam as the main protagonist; while he did not start off as a particularly powerful or likable pilot, in the latter half of the show Kamille was able to tap into all the spirits of fallen Newtypes and pull out the full potential of the Zeta Gundam.
Kamille would appear in the sequel series, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, but as a supporting character as losing comrades and the endless battles had begun to take an emotional toll. Finally, Kamille would make his last appearance in Mobile Suit Gundam in UC 0099: Moon Crisis, where he would be retired from fighting in the war and had become a doctor.
5 Haman Karn
Haman Karn first appeared in the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime; she was an antagonist in the series and was portrayed as a reserved and dedicated leader. It’s later revealed that Karn is a power-hungry politician and uses her charisma and expert strategy to manipulate any and everything to get her way. Karn is an expert pilot and possesses significant Newtype abilities, having been compared to Char Aznable.
In her next appearance in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Karn had evolved into an influential supreme leader of the Zeon army and a force of nature to her people and on the battlefield. Primarily piloting the Quebley, she was able to effortlessly operate the funnel system surpassing even Char’s capability.
4 Char Aznable
Char Aznable stands as one of the most infamous Newtypes in the Gundam ultimate century and one of the most talented mobile suit pilots in the entire franchise. Char served as the main antagonist of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime; he went on to reappear in several future iterations and has become a character archetype in all Mobile Suit Gundam incarnations as a “Man In A mask” trope.
Char was a high-ranking officer in the Zeon military who led numerous war missions with expert strategy and charisma. His Newtype abilities made him near undefeatable on the battlefield.
3 Amuro Ray
Amuro Ray is the main protagonist of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime; he was dragged into the world of piloting a mobile suit after being caught in the crossfire of a ground battle between Zeon and the Earth forces. He haphazardly began Piloting the earth forces prototype and, by utilizing his Newtype abilities, piloted the first gundam effortlessly.
Armuro continued to pilot the gundam for the Earth Forces and became a legendary soldier able to defeat the great Red Comet, Char Aznable. Amuro is perhaps the most famous Newtype and Pilot in Gundam.
2 Kira Yamato
Kira Yamato is the main protagonist of the Gundam Seed anime, he was dragged into the war, like most gundam pilots, when he and his classmates were escaping as a battle broke out in a civilian area. Caught in the middle, Kira stumbled upon the reason for the fight; a gundam prototype was in the area being transported to a secret military base. Kira saw his opportunity and used the mobile suit to secure safe passage for civilians and his friends.
Through the series, Kira would rise to the occasion, finding himself as the ace pilot of the Minerva space warship. Kira showed great skill in piloting, being classified as a coordinator, and even igniting his Newtype abilities on the battlefield, becoming a ruthless warrior that no one stood a chance of defeating. 1 Hathaway Noa
Noa started out as a supporting character in Mobile Suit ZetaGundam as a child pilot for the earth forces with a chip on his shoulder. Over time and multiple appearances years after the events of Zeta Gunda, Noa evolved into an expert pilot and the leader of a terrorist organization that fights against the Earth’s government and its corruption in the film Gundam Hathaway.
In the current timeline, Noa has become a decisive and master tactician; his Newtype powers have developed and, paired with his skill in controlling a Mobile Suit, is not to be trifled with.
